Hello everyone. Happy new week! The first quarter of the the year is coming to an end soon and it's so much to be grateful for. I believe all things are already working for our good.πππ. I hope Arsenal fans are not too pissed off that they forget to read what I have here today. Did I just type that??!!?? Pardon me.
Last week, someone suggested I write about "attention seekers" and I'll be doing just that today. How desperate are we for attention?? What miles would we travel to get the attention we think we deserve?
.
Sandra and Temi planned to attend their school's end of the session dinner party. They had to shop for their shoes, gowns, accessories, bags and wigs. Temi was concerned about the prices of the things they planned to get. "Instead of worrying about the prices of things in the market, why don't we draft a budget?" Sandra suggested.
"Yes!!! Nice idea... High five!" Temi screamed in affirmation as she raised her hands up to meet that of Sandra while twisting her waist in excitement.
They were both in their second year in the tertiary institution and wanted to get the attention of their peers through their expensive appearance. They drafted their budget after so much argument and considerations.
"Wow!! Sandra, a hundred thousand naira!" Temi exclaimed when she saw the list.
"Babe... We have to hustle this money out oo" Sandra cuts in.
"Abi!! Make we no go fall hand. " Temi replied in Nigerian pidgin.
They both came from an average middle class Nigerian family and their individual monthly allowance wasn't up to a quarter of the dinner party budget they had drafted. They brainstormed on how they could raise the money. After a lot of suggestions, an agreement was reached between them." One night stand.... No strings attached". It was Sandra's idea and they had to do it in order to get people notice them through their expensive dressing and appearance at the dinner party.
Humans are social individuals and have been created to interact with others directly or indirectly in the environment they find themselves. We often like to be played with, talked to, listened to and acknowledged. We have a certain standard some people look out for from the way we interact or relate with others. While we consciously or unconsciously gain people's attention, some of us are willing to go extra miles beyond our comfort zone just to get attention. These people are referred to as 'Attention seekers'.
Attention seekers put up a behaviour, attitude, facial expression etc. to be the centre of attention. They'll dress, throw parties, smile, seduce and even shop for attention. Right or wrong.... Just name it! All for attention. They keep up with this line "I must steal the show". Sometimes attention seeking becomes a survival threat for them. There's so much energy they unleash to get the attention they think they deserve. Most attention seekers are desperate. They can go as far as manipulating and feasting on the vulnerability of others.
Attention seeking only robs you of the benefit of respect. Paying attention to oneself is better than desperately seeking attention from others. You can get attention from your peers or a group of people by having good qualities and being productive. This will go a long way to boost confidence. "Confidence is silent, insecurities are loud." Desperately seeking attention makes you insecured. "Seek respect not attention!".
Have a great week ahead.
Anne.
